Stephy Fung presents Yin and Yang

The exhibition’s theme, “Yin & Yang,” reflects Fung’s experience growing up British-Chinese. She explains, “I always felt caught in between cultures as if I didn’t fully fit in either one, but over time I’ve decided to embrace that duality.” This concept of balance and harmony is central to her designs, which reimagine traditional Chinese elements through a modern streetwear lens.

To overcome the sometimes robotic movements associated with digital fashion, Fung collaborated with traditional Chinese dancers and used Motion AI technology to capture the dancer’s fluid movements, applying them to her digital avatars to achieve a more natural and emotive presentation.

The exhibition brings this vision to life with multiple screens scattered throughout the space, both inside and out. “The screens aren’t one big canvas – they’re broken up, so if I put one avatar on a single screen, people across the room couldn’t see it. I had to ditch my single-composition idea and rethink everything.” To address the challenge of visibility from different angles, Fung adapted her designs to play with scale and perspective. The result is an immersive experience where digital avatars appear larger than life, towering over viewers from every angle.

The project came to life through key collaborations: CLO powered the designs and provided sponsorship, Move AI delivered fluid, affordable motion capture, and the UKCPA performed the cultural movements to be animated.

The exhibition will conclude on 28 February.
